European Citizens Agora

Topic: How does disinformation affect EU enlargement?
Large-scale disinformation campaigns pose a considerable challenge to Europe and require a coordinated approach from EU countries, EU institutions, online platforms, the media, and EU citizens. An appropriate response to this danger is to provide the public with accurate and appropriate information about disinformation, to desensitize them to it, and to develop a set of skills such as critical thinking, verification of information, and improved media literacy. Disinformation also poses a threat to EU enlargement, as it is used by external actors to destabilize the accession process and undermine democracies in candidate countries. Social media platforms and new technologies have increased the scale of this phenomenon and the speed with which false or misleading information can reach different audiences, whether targeted or untargeted. The EU is combating this threat by imposing sanctions on disinformation actors and strengthening strategic communication to counter information manipulation and foreign interference, to increase the resilience to disinformation and hybrid threats.

The debate will be conducted in Romanian language.
